Choosing the Right Cake for Your Special Occasion.
Everyone enjoys a celebration - whether it be a birthday, wedding, wedding anniversary or any other special occasion - and a carefully chosen cake can add a final, personal, finishing touch to any celebration, and may be remembered for years to come. A cake can be classic and traditional - as is often the case with wedding cakes, for example - but can equally be as contemporary, and novel, as you like; it`s really just a question of personal taste, and the limit of your imagination.
Special Occasion Cakes
Cakes for special occasions are obviously available in many, many different styles and designs. Traditional wedding, and other special occasion, cakes are usually based on a round, or square design, but there is no reason to limit your choice to these shapes. Heart shaped, petal shaped and hexagonal cakes, for example, are all equally a possibility. Similarly, themed cakes - including, but not limited to, sporting, car and other novelty cakes, romantic cakes and cakes with a cartoon, or movie, theme - suitable for men, women and children are available. Children, especially, love birthday cakes, so why not surprise them with a Spiderman, Thomas the Tank Engine, or any other favourite themed cake, and see their faces light up?
Cake fillings, too, can be as rich and indulgent, or as healthy as you like. Wedding cakes, especially, are usually rich fruit cakes, matured in brandy, or rum, but many other options are available. Traditional Madeira cake, perhaps with strawberry and champagne filling, chocolate fudge cake, and lemon drizzle cake are popular for adult birthdays, weddings and wedding anniversaries, and apple and cinnamon, walnut and carrot are some of the `lighter` possibilities. Some of these cakes may still be a little to rich for youngsters, so sponge cake is popular for birthday cakes for children. It may also be possible to replace traditional, butter cream icing - very high in sugar - with whipped cream, or another lower calorie alternative.
The other important consideration, of course, is the size of the cake that you choose. A cake should be large enough for all the guests attending a celebration, and those - as is customary at weddings - who cannot attend, but to whom you would like to send a piece. As a rule of thumb, a 6 inch, round fruit cake is suitable for roughly 20 portions, a 12 inch, round fruit cake is suitable for roughly 90 portions and these figures increase by 20%, or so, for a square fruit cake of the same dimensions.
Choosing a Cake Baker.
It is a good idea to look at a selection of cakes from the portfolio of a cake baker, or designer, so that you can establish that his, or her, style is in keeping with you requirements. It may also be possible, of course, to design a cake to your own specification, in association with a baker, although there may be an additional charge for this. This can be useful if you have any unusual, specific requirements for wedding, or Silver Wedding anniversary gifts, for example. If you are expecting any guests with special dietary requirements - dairy product, or gluten, allergies, for example - it should also be possible for a cake baker to substitute ingredients.
